This coffee is the product of a partnership between José Mario Ángel and Don Álvaro Betancur, two producers from Valparaíso in Antioquia, Colombia. Don Álvaro has spent his life growing traditional coffee and is well known in his community, while José, a lawyer by profession, came to coffee through his own café and roasting brand in the town square. The two joined forces around an unusual variety they call Sumatra, grown from seeds that traveled from Indonesia and eventually landed in José's care in 2019. They planted 2,500 of these trees together at Finca Las Vegas, with Don Álvaro tending the plants and handling the harvest and processing, and José overseeing quality and experimentation. Their first full crop came in 2024, the result of years of shared work and friendship.

High above the town of Valparaíso, in the southwest of Antioquia, José Mario Ángel and Don Álvaro Betancur farm as partners. Don Álvaro has grown coffee his whole life and is among the most community-minded producers in the region; José, a lawyer by profession and a cupper by conviction, runs a roastery and a café on the main square. Fifteen years of friendship turned into a partnership when 2,500 seedlings of an unfamiliar variety — seed carried from the Indonesian island of Sumatra and germinated in Colombia — ended up in their care.
